Juliette Magill Kinzie and Nellie Kinzie (Gordon) Painting by James F. Wilkins
Family Portrait Comes Home Again
James Wilkins, the artist, was born in London, England in 1808. He studied at the Royal Academy in London and exhibited portraits there before coming to the United States. in the 1830s. He was a resident of Peoria, Illinois in 1837. This timing seems appropriate for the year the portrait is thought to have been painted. Wilkins visited New Orleans in 1842-43 and then settled in St Louis, Missouri. It seems that the Kinzies were interested in the arts as they later engaged George Peter Alexander Healy, another very accomplished painter, to make the portraits of Juliette Magill Kinzie and John Harris Kinzie that hang in the front parlor.
The painting and frame required considerable conservation before they could be exhibited to the public. Shea Avery Gallery in Marietta Georgia was engaged to conduct the cleaning and repairs to the canvas and the frame. The restoration work was documented step by step providing a detailed understanding of the deteriorated conditions and the conservation and restoration process. The painting has now been returned to its 1838 appearance and is hanging above the fireplace in “Mabel’s room” on the bedroom floor.
We are delighted that this important family portrait has returned home to Savannah and that we will be able to share it with our visiting Girl Scouts and guests.
