Access for All: A Public Education Series on Accessibility and Disability Rights

The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace will hold seven public programs this summer on disability-related topics— ranging from film screenings, discussion panels and walking tours. All events are free and open to the public. Join us in sparking conversation about understanding accessibility, disability, and inclusion.
This education series was made possible through the Birthplace's Access for All Grant, awarded by the Institute of Library and Museum Services. The multipronged project includes physical accessibility upgrades to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, a new accessibility focused Girl Scout program offered at the Birthplace, accessibility training workshops, and a public program series.
“We are excited to bring these important events to the Savannah community,” says Shannon Browning-Mullis, the Birthplace’s executive director. “We’ve learned so much during the Access for All project and look forward to continuing the conversation with local citizens and disability rights advocates.”
The Changing Reality of Disability in America Film Screening July 14th, 2022 at 6pm– Savannah Cultural Arts Center Join disability experts in our community to view this important film about the state of disability in America, followed by a discussion of how these issues are currently addressed in our own city and where we should go from here. All the Way to the Top in partnership with PBS Books and GPB July 19th, 2022 at 5pm– Virtual Event at pbsbooks.org Join PBS Books as author Annette Pimentel and activist Jennifer Chaffins-Keelan discuss All the Way to the Top and Jennifer’s experiences as a child activist. |
Judy Heumann in Conversation with PBS Books July 26th, 2022 at 5pm – Virtual Event at pbsbooks.org Join activist Judy Heumann, who is considered the mother of the disability rights movement, in a conversation about her books Being Heumann and Rolling Warrior. |
History of Disability in Savannah August 4th, 2022 at 6pm– Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Join Savannah disability advocate Tom Kohler to learn about the history of disability in Savannah. Tom started working with people with disabilities in the late 1960s, and has seen considerable change in the decades since. He’ll share his own experiences and the experiences of some of the people he worked with in the context of the national disability rights movement. |
Heritage Tourism and Disability August 18th, 2022 at 6pm– Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Join members of Savannah’s heritage tourism community, along with local disability advocates, to discuss how heritage tourism can better accommodate people with disabilities. Universal Design in a Historic Cityscape September 10th, 2022 at 9am – Begins at Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Join us to learn about Universal Design principles, and then put them into action! The group will be split into several walking tours, each led by user experts, to explore the accessibility or inaccessibility of a public space.
